Biography:
Wifredo Oscar de la Concepcion Lam y Casillo was born in Sagua La Granda, Cuba as the son of a Chinese man and an Afro-Cuban woman. He studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Havana and then traveled to Madrid in 1923. Here he enrolled in the Adacamia Libre and was taught by Fernandez Alvarez de Sotomayor. After fighting in the Spanish Civil War, Lam traveled to Paris and joined up with the Surrealists. He returned to his native Cuba and painted with a mixture of the influences he encountered in Europe as well as the art of his indigenous country. Lam lived in Haiti before moving to Paris in 1952, but he still traveled to the Caribbean frequently.
