Biography: The namesake of his father who was also a painter, Juan Carreno de Miranda trained in Madrid in the late 1620’s. Not long after, he was a popular artist, receiving commissions mostly from the church to paint altarpieces. His early work was derived from a combination of Italian and Flemish influences, notably the works of Rubens, van Dyck, and Titian. Carreno was hired as an assistant to paint frescoes in the Alcazar palace in 1658. It was on this commission that he met future collaborator, Francisco Rizi and also gained favor with the Spanish royalty. Carreno was appointed court painter to the queen in 1671 and mostly painted portraits.
