Biography:
Jean Avisse produced chairs and other sitting furniture during the 18th century but received little recognition for his work. His lack of income caused him to declare bankruptcy twice, once in 1769 and again in 1776. Although money was a problem, Avisse paid a large amount to be granted to title of “Flag Holder in the Town Hall Guards.” His chairs are elaborately decorated with motifs such as shells, flowers, and leaves and are stamped with the signature IAVISSE.
