Biography:
Jacques-Andre-Joseph Aved moved to Amsterdam with his widowed mother and Dutch sea captain stepfather. At the age of 16, Aved was traveling throughout the Netherlands, producing portraits at fairs. He worked briefly in studios of French artists living in Amsterdam before actually going to Paris. During this time, Aved made the acquaintance of Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin and together they devoted their work to depicting the “truth” of their subjects rather than just the outward appearance. Aved flourished in Paris, joining the Academie de Peinture and becoming an extensive collector of pieces by many important artists of the time.
