Biography:
John James Audubon was born in Hatiti to a French sea captain and a chambermaid. He was raised in France where he received his initial training from J.L. David. In 1803, Audubon moved to the United States to avoid joining Napoleon’s army and began a career as a naturalist. During this time, he also worked as a portraitist, drawing teaching, and a taxidermist. Eventually, Audubon merged his interest in nature and art to form an illustrated record of all North American bird species. In 1826, he moved to England and came across a publisher in London, the Robert Havell and Son firm. The first edition of his four-volume collection of etchings appeared in 1827, and is now one of the most valuable books in the world.
