Biography: Born in 1894, Finnish sculptor, Waino Aaltonen made his name sculpting war memorials. He worked mainly in bronze and stone, but occasionally incorporated other materials such as glass. His work was executed in a heroic and naturalist style, occasionally with a hint of Cubism. Following his country’s independence from Russia, Aaltonen’s work was seen as patriotic and representative of Finland’s newfound national spirit. Some of his best-known works are the monument to runner Paavo Nurmi and the bust of composer Sibelius.
